Earthquake Damages Temple Mount

by RKNews last modified 2008-02-25 02:55

A crater about 2 meters long, 1 meter deep and 1.5 meter wide was opened up near the Dome of the Rock when a 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook the areas of Lebanon, Syria and Israel on Friday, February 15th.

While felt most strongly along Israel's Coastal Plain, the Jerusalem area was also shaken. There were some cracks in buildings caused by the quake, but there were no injuries. However, there was significant damage on the Temple Mount  Plaza near the Dome of the Rock as seen above in a picture attributed to a "member of Al Aksa" and published by Yisrael Medad on his blog.

A few days previously a 4.1-magnitude earthquake was felt.

The Islamic Movement again has claimed that Israel is digging tunnels in the area, thus endangering the Mount. However, this is untrue and the opposite is in fact true. The Arab excavations and renovations on and under the mount have significantly weakened the mount while destroying ancient artifacts and structures.

It is ironic that a day or two after Israel was threatened with another kind of "earthquake":

The Islamic Republic News Agency wrote,"Iranian ambassador to Syria, Ahmad Moussavi, warned Wednesday that 'the death of (Hizbullah leader) Imad Mugniyah will lead to an earthquake in the Zionist regime. This despicable crime will increase the Zionists' disasters and strengthen the courage of those who will hit the Zionist regime."

The epicenter was near Tyre in southern Lebanese territory

The earthquake was felt strongly in Beirut, where some residents went out into the street when the earthquake struck and five people were reported as lightly injured in southern Lebanon.

Residents of Damascus, the Syrian capital about a 2-hour drive away, reported feeling the quake as well. Two smaller quakes were felt in Lebanon on Thursday night. Scientists have said that the area is overdue for a catastrophic quake according to historical patterns.
