The Jewish Revolt.....Then

by RKNews last modified 2007-05-10 22:57

"A Jewish revolt! Tunnels found prepared with emergency rations." Does this sound like tomorrow's news headline?

Archaeologists said Monday they have uncovered underground chambers and tunnels constructed in northern Israel by Jews for hiding from the Romans during their revolt in 66-70 CE. In an Associated Press article1 these headlines refer not to our day, but to the years 66-70 of the common era, 1,940 years ago when Israel lived under the Romans.

In a second article2Ran Shapira quoted Yardenna Alexandre of the Israel Antiquities Authority who spoke of today's Kafr Kana and its location which leads one to identify it as Cana of Galilee. She described the obvious Jewish character of the site with its ritual baths and hidden under the floor, a sensational find: "The jugs were put in an underground hideaway accessed via a cave hidden under a stone floor. The people who prepared [the jugs] went to a lot of trouble to conceal the structure in which the jugs were hidden. This means that the hewn cave, the tunnel and the three igloo chambers were an emergency refuge."
